Why UIF claims get rejected, and the part that depends on the employer

The story

IOL, “Why your UIF claim may be rejected and what you can do next”, 20 July 2026.

A UIF claim is most often held up by missing paperwork, and two of the key pieces come from the employer. IOL reported on 20 July 2026 (re-run in September) that a claim needs the worker's ID, a UI-19 from the employer, a salary schedule and proof she has registered as a work-seeker, plus other UIF forms depending on the claim. The UI-19 is the employer's form recording that she worked for you, what she earned and why the job ended. And every month she worked has to have been declared under the employer's UIF number, or it does not count towards her claim.

What the article says a claim needs

  • Her ID
  • The UI-19 from her employer
  • A salary schedule showing her pay
  • Proof that she has registered as a work-seeker (for unemployment benefit)
  • The claim forms the UIF asks for, depending on the type of claim

The article gives no deadline for appealing a rejected claim, and we have not found one we can confirm, so we do not give one here.

The employer's part

  • Register her and declare her. From 24 hours a month, register for UIF, and make sure she is declared under your reference number with her ID or passport number. A payment on its own does not credit her: see paid UIF but she can't claim.
  • Keep her declared. Each month she works needs to be on record against her name. Months that were never declared never count towards the one day of benefit she earns for every five days worked.
  • Hand over the UI-19 when the job ends, with the correct reason (resignation, dismissal, retrenchment or contract ending). The reason affects what she can claim.
  • Give her a certificate of service and her payslips.

If months were missed, they can be caught up and declared from her real start date: see UIF arrears, step by step.

What AskMandla does

We never file a worker's claim for her, and we do not issue a "UIF certificate". On our full service her UIF is worked out on every payslip; once your UIF reference number is confirmed and on file, we declare her under it and pay her UIF every month, and when the job ends we complete her UI-19 with the reason. The claim steps for her are in how to claim UIF.

Questions people ask

My domestic worker's UIF claim says I never declared her. What do I do?

Declare her under your UIF reference number from her real start date, on uFiling or a UI-19, and pay any months that were never paid, with the 10% penalty. Once the months show against her ID number, her claim can go ahead.

Can a domestic worker claim UIF if she resigned?

Not for unemployment benefit, unless the CCMA finds the resignation was really a dismissal. She can still claim other UIF benefits, such as maternity or illness benefit, if she qualifies.
