Severance and final pay when a domestic worker leaves

Reviewed September 2026 · Contracts & endings

The final payslip is the days worked up to the last day, plus any leave the worker has not taken, paid out in cash. Severance, one week's pay for every completed year, is owed only when the job ends by retrenchment, not when the worker resigns or is dismissed for misconduct. AskMandla works it all out and issues the final payslip and the UI-19.

What always goes into the final pay

  • Wages for the days worked up to the last day.
  • Any leave the worker has built up but not taken, paid out.
  • Pay in place of notice, if you end the job immediately instead of working the notice period.

When severance is owed, and when it is not

Severance of one week's pay per completed year is owed when the job ends by retrenchment. It is not automatically owed when the worker resigns, or when they are fairly dismissed for misconduct. Incapacity through ill health is its own case.

Unused leave

Any annual leave the worker has not taken is paid out on the final payslip. See how annual leave works for how the balance builds up.

How AskMandla helps

We work out every part of the final pay, produce the final payslip, and prepare the UI-19 so the worker can claim from UIF, so nothing is missed and nothing is overpaid.
