How does AskMandla work?

Reviewed July 2026 · Getting started

AskMandla is a simple WhatsApp service that helps employers of domestic workers stay compliant with South African labour law. You chat with Mandla on WhatsApp to sign up, get a legally compliant employment contract, and sort your UIF admin. Each month we handle payslips, leave tracking, and salary payments for you. There are no apps to download and no logins. Whether you are an employer or a domestic worker, AskMandla is here to keep things clear, legal, and fair.

You can start by messaging Mandla on WhatsApp at wa.me/27799357646, and you can ask for a human to help at any point.

Step by step: how AskMandla works

1. Sign up via WhatsApp

You begin by messaging on WhatsApp. Mandla guides you through a few simple questions to create your profile.

  • No apps to download
  • Takes under 10 minutes
  • Either the employer or the worker can start the process

2. Create the employment agreement

The system generates a legally compliant contract based on your answers.

  • Customised to the worker's role (nanny, cleaner, gardener, and so on)
  • Includes working hours, pay rate, duties, and leave
  • Sent to both people via WhatsApp for review and signature

3. Sort your UIF (optional, but recommended)

UIF is the Unemployment Insurance Fund. If you are not yet set up, AskMandla helps with:

  • Handling your UIF employer admin with the Department of Employment and Labour
  • Processing the domestic worker's UIF information
  • Keeping you compliant with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA)

4. Pay one monthly invoice

At the start of each month you receive one invoice that includes:

  • The domestic worker's salary
  • UIF and any other deductions
  • The AskMandla subscription fee

You pay it by EFT, and AskMandla pays your worker by payday.

5. We pay your worker

At month-end:

  • The domestic worker receives their salary by EFT
  • They receive a payslip showing earnings, leave, and deductions
  • Both the employer and the worker can access the documents via WhatsApp

6. Ongoing support

Each month we help with:

  • Tracking attendance and leave
  • Handling sick notes, maternity leave, and warnings
  • Generating payslips and keeping records
  • Keeping you compliant, even when the law changes

Who is AskMandla for?

  • Employers who pay domestic workers by EFT
  • Live-out nannies, gardeners, cleaners, and au pairs
  • Households that care about legal compliance and fairness
